"Mari" maxi dress with berry print and embroidery blue

Description

Wear the Past Lightly

Spun from 100% cotton and softened by the wind, the Mari dress drapes like a sigh – light, effortless, and made for the quiet rituals of everyday magic. Its naturally loose shape flows with you, while the waist is gently drawn in with an embroidered belt. Side smocking offers comfort that shifts with your rhythm. A trail of metal buttons adds a gleam of function wrapped in beauty.

But beneath the fabric lies a lineage.

From Viking roots to sarafan

Long before it became the folk dress of Eastern Europe, the sarafan danced through history in the form of the Norse hangeroc – a pinafore-style overdress worn by Scandinavian women in the 10th century. Made of linen or wool and fastened with the iconic “tortoise brooches”, it emphasized both practicality and elegance.

While the word sarafan comes from Persian, the structural idea, a sleeveless or strap dress layered over a tunic, is believed to have passed through rivers and empires, from Varangian longships to the woven dreams of Kievan Rus’. It morphed, softened, and evolved into the embroidered, belted sarafans that became central to East Slavic folk costume.

A modern echo of the sarafan’s journey, the Mari dress honors the silhouette, the cinched grace, the layered freedom. It moves with the same timeless ease, shaped by centuries and stories.

And yes – it has pockets. Because spells need somewhere to hide.

Our workshop has deep knowledge of traditional embroidery and garment construction. Together, we explore both European folk patterns and Indian craft techniques, mixing traditions to create something new. It's a collaboration we're proud of.
