“Antonia” Black Velvet Coat with Wool and Mohair Details

Some pieces arrive fully formed, others take shape slowly. As months of research into materials and traditional techniques settled into the shape we had been imagining all along, it felt like a satisfying ending of a familiar fairytale.

Such was the case for the “Antonia” coat too. An outstanding silhouette within the collection, this mid-length coat is made of cotton velvet and lined with sturdy cotton canvas. The choice of lining was deliberate in order to give the coat warmth, weight and structure. It is intentionally left open at the lower hem, allowing the lining and outer fabric to move independently, reducing friction and granting the wearer greater freedom of movement.

As mentioned, this coat was inspired first and foremost by materials, textures and techniques: the wonderful curly lambswool details found in traditional dress from Bihor, the ubiquitous presence of velvet in Transylvanian folk clothing… both come together in a newly imagined silhouette.

For the fur trim, a gorgeous blend of lambswool and mohair create the rich, curly texture we sought, while keeping the pile itself natural. Still, a small amount of artificial fibre is necessary in the supporting mesh in order to hold the hairs in place, but that stays entirely enclosed by the seams.

At the front, undulating velvet decorations and velvet-covered buttons add another layer of texture and ornament, completing a coat that owes more to the atmosphere and material richness of its references than to any single traditional costume.
