Ukrainian "Vyshyvanka" blouse with black embroidery from Podillia

The word “Vyshyvanka” comes from “vyshyvaty,” the Ukrainian word for embroidery. It designates the country’s traditional embroidered blouse, one whose roots are centuries old.

Across regions and traditions, the “Vyshyvanka” shifts. Color, motif, technique, each one changes from one area to the next, carrying the particular memory of the place it came from. In modern Ukraine, the “Vyshyvanka” is not everyday wear. Instead, it marks moments that matter like Easter, Christmas, weddings or the first day of school. Once a year, on “Vyshyvanka” day, the whole country wears it together. A collective act of identity, the “Vyshyvanka” is steeped in meaning and a living tradition.

Voriagh honors the legacy, cultural heritage and symbolism of the “Vyshyvanka,” which is why we have chosen to have this blouse manufactured in its home country, Ukraine.

For our first “Vyshyvanka” blouse, the embroidery belongs to the Podillia tradition, historically characterized by black thread worked in cross-stitch. The stitches are uniform and tightly worked, with a pronounced tactile relief that speaks to the precision of the hand behind them. The motifs are created with patience and precision, clarity and intention, like all things properly made.

The blouse is made of 100% natural, undyed linen, with that off-white, earthy shade inherent to the raw fiber. The fabric is substantial, structured and durable, bearing the characteristic feel of a piece that will outlast seasons.

Chloé is 165 cm (5’5”) tall and wears size S/M. Her measurements are 91 cm (36”) bust, 69 cm (27”) waist, and 101 cm (40”) hips.

Lise has black hair, is 176 cm (5’9”) tall, and wears size XL/XXL. Her measurements are 115 cm (45”) bust, 98 cm (38.5”) waist, and 128 cm (50.5”) hips.
