"Rózsa" embroidered ceremony apron

Description

The devil kidnapped a young man from Matyó Land. His fiancée pleaded and begged, until the devil set his condition: bring me the most beautiful flowers of the meadow in your apron and I will return him to you. It was the dead of winter. She searched the frozen ground and found nothing. So she ran from house to house, gathering colored yarns from the women of the village, and embroidered day and night until her apron bloomed with roses, tulips and peonies. She brought it to the devil. He was pleased. He kept his word.
This apron carries that legend.

Black linen suggests the ground, the color of earth from which harvest and life emerge. Along the lower edge, a richly embroidered band unfolds red for joy, yellow for the warmth of summer, blue for sorrow and mourning, for the depth that makes the other colors sing. A double lace trim of natural linen lace finishes the border, one separating the embroidered bands, one at the hem, its undyed tone grounding the vividness of the embroidery with something gentler, more ancient.

Traditionally worn flat by both men and women, so that the embroidery falls in full view, uninterrupted. Here it can be worn either way: flat, as tradition intended, or softly gathered at the waist for a more contemporary silhouette.
