“István” embroidered Matyó inspired culotte

Description
These trousers draw direct inspiration from the bő gatya, the traditional wide trousers worn by the horsemen and shepherds of the Hungarian Great Plain, the csikós of the puszta, the legendary horse keepers of the Alföld.

Cut in our versionfrom white linen and using an extraordinary volume of fabric, the original bö gatya moved in the wind almost like a skirt, the distinction barely perceptible. Widespread in the 19th century, it was the Matyó people who carried it furthest into the 20th, preserving it as festive dress. The most ceremonial versions were embroidered with the flowing folyókás motif in red.

Made of ecru cotton, the cut remains faithful to that spirit: very full, gathered at an elasticated waistband and finished with a drawstring finished with two navy tassels.

Festive versions of the bő gatya were traditionally finished with embroidery and fringing at the hem. The floral broderie anglaise frieze at the lower leg, with its scalloped edges and motifs in navy, slate blue and saffron yellow, continues that tradition in a contemporary language, reimagining a floral vocabulary while maintaining chromatic harmony with the István blouse. Together, they form a cohesive ensemble.

This piece is made in India, where we've worked with the same workshop for almost 10 years. India is the birthplace of cotton and home to over 500 embroidery techniques, some of the world's oldest. We chose to produce here not for cost, but for unmatched expertise in handwork and natural materials.

Our workshop has deep knowledge of traditional embroidery and garment construction. Together, we explore both European folk patterns and Indian craft techniques, mixing traditions to create something new. It's a collaboration we're proud of.
